About American Association of Physicists in medicine
North Central Chapter
AAPM is a scientific and professional organization, founded in 1958, composed of more than 8000 scientists whose clinical practice is dedicated to ensuring accuracy, safety and quality in the use of radiation in medical procedures such as medical imaging and radiation therapy.
We are generally known as medical physicists and are uniquely positioned across medical specialties due to our responsibility to connect the physician to the patient through the use of radiation producing technology in both diagnosing and treating people. The responsibility of the medical physicist is to assure that the radiation prescribed in imaging and radiation therapy is delivered accurately and safely.
One of the primary goals of AAPM is the identification and implementation of improvements in patient safety for the medical use of radiation in imaging and radiation therapy.
Our membership includes the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. This region consists of several world renowned institutions with highly active academic and clinical programs, numerous smaller institutions, and several medical device manufacturers relevant to the field of medical physics.
The NCCAAPM chapter meets once during Spring and once during Fall. These meetings consist of scientific presentations, a business meeting, student presentations, and many vendors show their wares.
We welcome members from this region and others to participate in these informative and interesting events.

Our History
Formation of the North Central chapter was first considered in 1970; proposed constitution, by-laws and geographical boundary was discussed during the 1973 RSNA at the Blackstone Hotel. The first meeting was held April 5, 1974 in Madison, WI and was a joint meeting with the NC Health Physics Society. John Cameron served as the Temporary Chairman and Acting Secretary.
